Why do women burn more calories around their periods?

I am just looking for a scientific explanation of when and why women burn more calories shortly before or during their periods.
Answer
It's normal to have a 5 to 10 percent increase in calorie burning in the days before a woman's period. Metabolism increases because menstrual-cycle activities add to the body’s workload. The uterine muscles contract to force out the blood and tissue embedded in its lining and the body needs to manufacture hormones and replacement blood cells. The Guide to Women's Health writes more about the menstrual cycle at About.com.
