What are the problems with gaining weight too fast?
Asked by anonymous on Aug 21, 2008 in Fitness

I am underweight and I have been told to gain by my doctor. Will the speed at which I gain weight make a difference in what my body looks like?

Answer

The main problem with quick weight gain is that it leads to developing a high percentage of body fat.  If you gain weight slower while doing weight-training exercises, you can build lean muscle tissue as you gain.  Genetic differences make some people gain more muscle than others, but ideally, you should gain 6 pounds of lean tissue for every 4 pounds of fat if you train two or three times a week.  Certainly, starved and severely malnourished people undergo fluid and electrolyte shifts when they gain too fast, but I hope that doesn’t apply to you.  Read about diet and exercise to gain weight from the Guide to Exercise at About.com.
