Does Phase 2 Starch Blocker work?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 23, 2008 in Weight Loss

I have heard that a person who wants to lose weight can take Phase 2 (starch blocker) and eat starchy foods, and still lose weight. Is this true?

Answer

Over-the-counter starch blockers may produce some weight loss, but research by investigators without ties to the manufacturer is needed for definitive proof. Phase 2 contains a protein that inhibits an enzyme (alpha-amylase) that breaks down starch in the small intestine. Undigested starch then travels to the colon and is excreted. Opponents argue that the protein in the product is digested before it can inhibit alpha-amylase and the body produces more alpha-amylase than the pills could reasonably block. If the product is effective, undigested carbohydrate would produce cramps, bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Starch blockers do not address the eating and lifestyle changes needed for permanent weight control.
