I have an eating disorder and I just moved to Beijing. I have no idea what to eat!
Asked by anonymous on Mar 22, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I gained 7 lbs after 7 wks and I'm afraid of an ED relapse.  There is no nutrition information on anything over here, save Western fast food or some imports.  The weight gain is already starting to affect my life in negative ways and I want to find a healthy way to reverse this process before it spirals out of hand.  Eating in front of people makes me nervous so I'm avoiding it. There's no kitchen here so all prepared food is social. I order food that I hate I won't want to eat it.

Answer

Eating disorders zap your strength and resilience and so there’s nothing left to cope with the stress of foreign travel.  If your eating disorder is spiraling out of hand, then you should make plans to return home.  You can’t worry about nutrition information in Beijing because it’s just not there.  Ask your sponsors and older students to show you the little restaurants that serve food that is not greasy.  You can order whole foods like garlic broccoli, eggs and tomatoes, rice, and clear soup.  You can also buy from the street vendors who sell grilled corn on the cob and sweet potatoes.
