How can I convince my 15 year old to lose weight?
Asked by angela71 on Sep 24, 2008 in Family & Pregnancy

My 15 year old won't diet because she is afraid of losing her D size breasts.  She is 5’2” and weighs 150 lbs. Can you help me convince her that she will lose weight proportionally and will not be flat-chested?

Answer

Breast tissue is predominantly fat and the breasts will shrink somewhat with weight loss, but a D-cup will most likely become a C-cup. We do tend to lose weight proportionately and our basic shape does not change.  But why do I think your daughter will have one excuse after another?  Most teenagers don’t change unless it is their idea.  You need to model good eating, shopping and exercise behaviors and avoid being overly rigid or sending mixed messages.
