How can I break the craving habit?
Asked by gimondo on Jun 17, 2008 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I was pregnant for about two years in a row, almost two years ago, and it's hard to get out of the craving habit. I have tried exercise and diet, but it seems all I am left with is a temper and a headache.  Do you have any advice that might help me to overcome this horror?

Answer

Cravings are usually a form of self-medication.  To break the cycle, commit to eating only when you are hungry.  When you get the urge, note how you feel, and if you are not physically hungry, find another way to deal with your feelings. Perform a ritual to restore balance.  For example, you could play soothing music, turn down the lights, do deep breathing, go outdoors, or call a friend.  If you wait for 10 – 20 minutes, the urge should pass. You can prevent stress build-up through self-care activities, like yoga and meditation.  Read more about managing stress from the Guide to Mental Health on About.com.
